First Year, Deciding between majoring in English/French/Management

“My friend actually goes to Humber … [the one on the left] and she’s visiting me today. We met in high school but didn’t become friends until grade twelve. We understand and get along with each other really well.”

“How do you like the bubble tea here? I’ve only had it once.”

“It’s actually really good!”

“Up to now, what has been one of the happiest moments of your life?”

“One of the happiest moments of my life was a few weeks ago, when my dad told me that he supported my boyfriend, Paul, and I being together. I’m a Chinese-Canadian … and Paul is black … when our intentions to date seriously were made aware to my parents, a huge ‘kerfuffle’ ensued shortly after. It’s been a long two years, but Paul’s commitment to sticking this through, and his relentless care for me has been my greatest encouragement to do the same for him and to fight for what we have together. Several weeks ago my family (and huge extended family) invited Paul over for dinner to celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival. On the way there, my dad told me that he ‘supports Paul [and I] 100%.’ I thought I would faint, I was so happy and relieved.”

Third Year, Double Major in CCIT and Sociocultural Anthropology.

“One aspect of my life that I feel successful in is understanding what I love and appreciating the little things. Although not technically an achievement – I would argue otherwise – it has made me feel inspired to the point that it drives my academic and creative work, and motivates me to be the best person I can be. I am really happy to have developed a sense of awareness that I think too many of us take for granted or do not even recognize.”

“When you’re done University, what is one thing you would like to do that you haven’t had the chance to do yet?”

“When I’m done University, I want to travel to New Zealand. I’m a nature lover, and that place has some beautiful sites to see. I’ve never really had a chance to travel anywhere in my life, so I like the idea of being somewhere that is completely new and unfamiliar to me.”

Third year, DEM Specialist

“What’s one unique or special thing about you?”

“One thing that is special about me is that I always keep positive. I remember at one point in first year here I was failing all of my classes. I told myself that if I kept working hard, it would pay off. I think people always encounter challenges at some point, but keeping a positive outlook is always better instead of giving into failure.”
